Port 165

What is Port 165?

Port number 165 is used by the GGP (Gateway-to-Gateway Protocol), which was utilized primarily for exchanging routing information between different gateways in a network. Developed in the early days of the Internet, GGP facilitated communication across diverse network architectures, allowing for better coordination and management of data traffic especially in environments that relied on interconnected networks. Operating over TCP, port 165 enabled gateways to share routing tables and status information, helping to ensure that data packets could find their most efficient paths across various interconnected systems. Although GGP has largely been superseded by more advanced protocols such as the Internet Protocol (IP) and newer routing protocols like Border Gateway Protocol (BGP), port 165 remains a significant historical reference point. It exemplifies the early efforts to enable seamless communication and routing in a burgeoning digital landscape, illustrating the evolution of networking technologies that continue to underpin the robustness and reliability of current Internet infrastructure.
